Stuart A. Weitzman (wife, Jane Weitzman) is the designer of the internationally famous, high-end shoe company, Stuart Weitzman Inc.

Stuart Weitzman's trademark use of unique materials (e.g. cork, vinyl, Lucite, wallpaper, and 24-karat gold) and his attention to detail have garnered him and his company a global following and admiration. His shoes are now sold in 45 countries — everywhere from France to the West Indies to Japan.

Weitzman's father, Seymour Weitzman, started a shoe factory in Haverhill, Massachusetts in the late 1950's, "Seymour Shoes" (also sold under the "Mr. Seymour" label.) Stuart Weitzman began designing shoes for his father's business in the early 1960's, when Stuart was in his 20's.

Stuart graduated George W. Hewlett High School in 1958 and the Wharton School of Business in 1963. When Seymour Weitzman died in 1965, Stuart took over the business with his older brother, Warren Weitzman. They sold the business to a company in Spain in 1972, but Stuart continued to design shoes for the company. In 1994, he bought back the business, but continues to manufacture his shoe designs in Spain.

Today, Weitzman creates over 300 styles each year, from sneakers and oxfords to sandals and stilettos. However, he has not strayed far from the lessons he learned so many years ago. While apprenticing for his father's company, the Ivy League graduate worked alongside traditional craftsmen in every stage of production. Thanks to this, Weitzman is one of the few designers who is also a skilled pattern maker. Because he has such a broad understanding of footwear engineering, he feels that a stunning design is not enough. "I've always believed that a beautiful shoe is useless unless it feels as wonderful as it looks," Weitzman asserts. This also explains his insistence on offering the widest range of sizes imaginable - more than 50.

Not only are Stuart Weitzman shoes found in the most fashionable stores from Milan to Munich, but also in locations as diverse as the Far East and the West Indies.

Weitzman's remarkable ability to see beyond the traditional use of familiar materials, combined with his expertise in construction, enables him to adapt the most exotic materials possible. It is not uncommon to find Stuart Weitzman shoes made of cork, bamboo and even 24 karat gold. Naturally, every line includes the best calfskin, be it mirrored, burnished or textured.

Considering the designer's passion for exploring the outer limits of creativity, it is no wonder his shoes, which are sold in 50 countries worldwide, are regularly seen on the pages of fashion magazines such as Vogue, W, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Italy's Grazia, Britain's Marie Clari, Germany's Vogue and Hong Kong's Bazaar.

Weitzman's dedication to fusing fashion and fit has earned accolades from both the design world and legions of diverse fans, including Sharon Stone, Calista Flockhart, Minnie Driver and Laura Bush. His $2,500 multicolored jeweled shoes are a familiar sight at events like the Oscars and the Emmys and his bridal collections have won awards of their own. "Feminine doesn't have to mean high heels," he maintains, holding a pink suede moccasin in one hand and a brown polished calfskin boot in the other. Women clearly agree with him: they buy over 1.5 million pairs of Stuart Weitzman shoes every year.

The shoes that dreams are made of, Stuart Weitzman has for years been legendary for his innovative, fashionable designs and premium quality, making his shoes truly enviable, newsworthy, and original. Inspired by his father Seymour, also a pioneer in shoe design, Stuart Weitzman designed his first shoe at age 20 and never looked back. One of the world's premier shoe designers, Stuart Weitzman also is very hands-on with the entire design and manufacturing process, personally overseeing the lengthy, painstaking process involving the most talented artisans in his workshops in Spain.
